Common Tango Mistake 1: Focusing on Steps Instead of Connection
Will I learn enough steps to look good?
Common Tango Mistake: New dancers often believe that tango is about memorizing sequences. Unfortunately this is the way Tango is often taught, and as a result beginners lack so much opportunity to look good with very simple uncomplicated steps, just using the music well.
Tango is at its heart both an improvised dance, an elegant dance and a social dance. And so learning how to lead and follow so you can improvise is so important, instead of doing sequences just because you have been taught the basic 8
The Fix: At Tango Delight, we show you how to look good just using that and also why the basic 8 is not so good socially and how you can avoid the most common problem, that plagues many people who learn that and dance it all their lives.
we emphasise the embrace, the partnership and musical connection. Instead of learning steps for the sake of steps, we focus on how you stay in harmony with both your partner and also other dancers near you. We show how good and elegant basic movements are, when done well. Work on your posture, balance, and listening to your partner as well as your own movements.
Tango is at its heart both an improvised dance, an elegant dance and a social dance.
The steps will come naturally once the connection is solid. Because this is how you learn to improvise and make it your own dance.
You learn how to connect with the music in a meaningful way so you can dance in a more elegant and beautiful way even at beginner level
Common Tango Mistake 2. Poor Posture and Frame
Poor Posture and frame
Common Tango Mistake: Slouching, leaning too much on your partner, overly rigid frame or leaning back.
Because Tango is a social dance, this mistake is common and rarely seems to get corrected.
Here is the reality, if you slouch you are likely to never send a clear message to your partner and will most likely feel heavy on them.
If you are to stiff if will be unpleasant like dancing with a broomstick, yes it can be done, but it’s not pleasant
If you lean back, and this one is very common or arch your back fatigue sets in quickly, now you are stiff and straining and also out of position to dance more advanced options
We understand what good dance posture is and focus on it heavily so you can go to social events and dance all night and truly enjoy the experience.
The Fix: Think of posture as a communication tool. Keep your spine tall and grounded, shoulders relaxed, and arms alive but gentle. Good posture makes the embrace feel safe, comfortable, and responsive.
We train on this every week so you understand and can eventually do it without conscious thought. It just becomes so natural.
Yes it does take some time to retain your body sometimes, so look at it this way, it’s good posture that will help you in daily life.
Common Tango Mistake 3. Not Listening or understanding to the Music
Common Tango Mistake: Rushing through movements without paying attention to rhythm or phrasing. This is so common because it is hard to teach, hard to understand and many people thing this is not learning step. No it’s learning so much more. You can make every single move you make so much nicer and more elegant and have so many more choices learning how to both hear and use the music.
At Tango delight we teach this right from the very first class.
The Fix: Argentine tango is a musical dance. At Tango Delight, we teach you how to hear the nuances of different orchestras. Take time to really listen to tango music daily. Try dancing to Di Sarli for smooth elegance, or D’Arienzo for rhythmic clarity.
We start with the earlier orchestras because they are much simpler to hear, we also have exercises that will challenge you to both hear and dance the music so much better and it builds week after week.
Enrollments for this beautiful dance are now open for classes and lessons. Current Term details are on the “Lessons and Venue” tab.
Common Tango Mistake 4. Leading with Force or Guessing the Lead
Common Tango Mistake: Leaders sometimes try to “push” followers into moves. Followers often anticipate or guess what comes next.
The Fix: Good leading is about invitation, not insistence.
A good friend said there are probably 1,000 things a good lead does and it can take a lifetime to master just one.
This may be true if you are learning long complicated sequences to advanced musical choices.
The reality is, there are just a few you need to focus on when you start learning tango, and like all things the more you use them the better they get right though the time you spend dancing. You just need to learn the few really important things. After a lifetime in dance, we understand what is really important to lead well. And you start learning it from day one.
Followers should wait for a clear signal. We teach subtle lead-and-follow techniques to build a dialogue, not a debate. Less force, more presence.
Both Following and leading have their challenges. A good lead can lead many followers through step they do not know, and a good follower can be lead to do remarkable things. There is an art to both and again because we want you to make this your dance and not be a clone of us we teach this right from beginners.
Common Tango Mistake 5. Fear of Making Mistakes
Common Tango Mistake: Beginners often freeze, start again or apologize when something doesn’t go right. And they do it over and over and over.
Your partner understands mistakes happen there is no need to continually stop and keep starting again.
Fortunately there is a massive secret that can give you an extraordinary amount of confidence, at Tango Delight we teach it to you early.
The Fix: Mistakes are essential to learning. In our Inner West Tango studio, we create a non-judgmental space where experimentation is encouraged. Embrace mistakes as part of your journey—they’re stepping stones to mastery.
Common Tango Mistake 6. Neglecting the Walk
The Mistake: Trying complex moves before mastering the tango walk
The Fix: Tango is a walking dance. A controlled, musical, and elegant walk sets the foundation for everything. We spend time refining this essential skill with different orchestras and walking exercises that build confidence and fluidity
Common Tango Mistake 7. Not Practicing
The Mistake: Coming to class but not practicing between sessions.
The Fix: Like any skill, tango improves with repetition. You don’t need a partner to practice posture, balance, walking, and musicality. At Tango Delight, we provide homework and guided practice tools to help you grow faster—even solo. These are not complicated, easy to do and do not require a lot of time. Some can be done while watching TV. Of course we understand a busy lifestyle. It’s up to you fi decide if you want to find hte time, but some things can be done just for a few minutes while watching TV
In fact you can think and adjust your posture as you shop, walk around during the day, being aware of things like slouching as just as important, when you catch yourself doing something like that you instantly become self aware
If you come to class a little early we encourage you to start doing simple things that will help you while we are getting ready
Common Tango Mistake 8. Not Learning to Navigate the Dance Floor
The Mistake: Blocking traffic, dancing against the line of dance, or using large moves in crowded spaces. This is a social dance, we are not the only people on the floor. Flying legs, stepping in the wrong way can hurt people, we all want to avoid this, we teach you how to dance well to avoid all of the potential issues
The Fix: Tango has its own social dance etiquette. Learn how to respect the ronda (line of dance), adjust to crowded floors, and communicate through eye contact and body language. Our Sydney inner west classes include floorcraft lessons from day one.
Common Tango Mistake 9. Comparing Yourself to Others
The Mistake: Feeling discouraged by more advanced dancers. Often this is self perception only. Ladies actually watch man that do less and do it with the music because it’s often so much nicer for them. Or you start watching youtube and other places thinking I have not learned that. Well there is probably a good reason, it’s a social dance, yes sometimes these things can be done late on a night or early on a night but rarely on a busy floor.
Trying to do something that looks fantastic but you are but ready often leads to frustration. We know, it’s common. What we want from our dancers is to understand they are ready for it long before they actually try it. Only by consistently understanding your weight is where it needs to be as an example, should you try to do some of these things. If you try long before you have that awareness and understanding it leads to frustration and the thought you can’t do it but you should be able to. Hang back, don’t try these things until your fundamental are really sound. You learning will be so much quicker and easier
The Fix: Tango is a personal journey. Every dancer you admire once struggled too. Progress comes often in waves, usually because you are trying to do things to hard for your ability and yes there are sometimes good possibilities to advance this way but it often leads just to frustration. We focus on individual growth and celebrate every improvement, no matter how small.
Common Tango Mistake 10. Not Knowing the Orchestras
The Mistake: Treating all tango music the same.
The Fix: Each orchestra has a unique style that requires a different response. We teach you how to listen and adjust your dancing to orchestras like Biagi, Troilo, and Pugliese. This enhances both your musicality and connection.
Like many things however, before you can identify orchestras and use what they play, you need to understand the basics and how to actually hear and interpret the music. Tango has many layers as it evolved it did not happen all at once, so it should be with your dancing. You do not need to hear and use everything to have a good dance, and as your dance grow more so will your choices
